Who Needs Blood?

Blood donating is a life saving practice that should be adopted by every healthy person. Your donated blood is needed by someone every 2 seconds. Sometimes your blood can help more than one life. Some of the people who are in need of blood are:

  • Accident victims
  • Surgical patients
  • Premature babies
  • Trauma patients
  • Immune disorder patients
  • Haemophilia patients
  • Anaemic patients and many more

Blood is sometimes separated into different components for many varieties of uses. The process of blood separation is called Cytapheresis. Red blood cells separated from the blood can be used for trauma patients, cancer and anaemic patients, people who are undergoing open heart surgery, patients having joint replacements and fractures etc. The platelets from the blood can be used for patients undergoing chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, liver diseases, major surgeries and severe trauma. Plasma is useful for patients undergoing major transfusions, in patients with burns, haemophilic patients, and some other blood diseases.

Need for blood:

Blood is a priority for many, who are battling for their lives. There is a regular need for blood all the time. However, there is only a finite storage time, after which blood cannot be stored. Red blood cells also can be stored only for a particular period of time – 42 days. Cryoprecipitate and fresh frozen plasma can be stored for 365 days. Blood platelets have a shelf life of only 5 days. As there is a need for blood every other second, there is always a shortage of stored blood. Healthy people should realise the importance of blood donation and practice this regularly to improve their own health too.

Anyone above the age of 18 can donate blood. If you are above 18, weigh more than 50kgs (110lbs), you are the perfect candidate to donate blood. When your blood can be of help in so many ways, you should come forward to donate blood voluntarily. You or someone in the future might need blood, which has been donated by someone in the society. Do your bit and help save lives and enrich your life with a profound sense of fulfilment.
